I always find myself looking for newly opened places and exciting goings-on around Birmingham. Random days out that Ryan and I can look forward to for a casual little date day every now and then. Just a little excuse to try out new places, and not spend too much money for the sake of it. Luckily, Birmingham is becoming such a great city for things to do, with new places opening up such as Ghetto Golf and Lane 7. It’s bringing excitement back to social trips again! Giving us something more to do than just simply going for a drink and a bite to eat. I thought I would share some of my favourite things to do around the city with my partner in crime, the alternative date ideas if you will!
Go to a Food Festival or Two
Okay so, food is still a great plan! Especially when you’re a ‘foodie’ like we both are. We love trying out new street food, whilst grabbing a drink with a great atmosphere! As we are both massive fans of Digbeth Dining Club, food fests are a great alternative if you prefer to make a day of it. We recently went to Kings Heath Festival, a street festival with a great atmosphere and live music (oh and it’s FREE). Independent Birmingham also puts on some of the best food festivals in town. Actually, why not also visit a gin festival, or coffee, or even a cheese fest. They all exist! We even accidentally stumbled upon the Birmingham Latin American festival quite recently, couples and friends were dancing in the middle of the street and it was great un-planned fun.
Pet some Animals on an Animal Experience Day
Wowcher will be your best friend for this one! I picked up an experience day on there for £49 for 2 people at Hoo Farm (which is so cute and worth the visit in general). This included our entry, fox feeding, and meeting some badass caracals and servals. Well, one of the caracals did kind of try to eat Ryan, so, bonus points if your date isn’t going too well? Honestly, even without the experience day, a trip to see animals is always a winner for me! One of my favourite date days is to visit Cannon Hill Park and pop into the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park. Entry is so cheap and they have both red pandas and otters! Personally, this point has me sold immediately, I LOVE red pandas!
Go to a Random Event or Meet Up
Look on Facebook events, pick a random event that you almost know nothing about, and go to it. Okay, maybe not one for the first ever date. When you know eachother a bit better, try it out, you might end up discovering a new interest! There’s a lot of events around Birmingham which you may never hear about. However, I have found myself visiting independent movie festivals, disco soup meet-ups, and local talent events by finding out about them on Facebook. Also, check out the Meetup app! Turn up with your partner, and meet likeminded people. This is a great one if you’re both a tad anxious because it takes you fully out of your comfort zone! There’s all kind of groups on there. From networking to gaming, and drinking, to well, whatever you want – you can also create your own.
Have an Alternative Cinema Date
Seriously, forget about Cineworld and Odeon right now! Go to either The Mockingbird or The Electric Cinema instead, you won’t regret it. The Mockingbird does some seriously tasty food too, grab yourself a pot of halloumi fries for the movie. Afterwards, as you’ll be at the Custard Factory, you can just head over to The Old Crown or Digbeth Dining Club for drinks. Don’t forget, Digbeth Dining Club actually holds retro gaming nights every now and then too. Catch a super cool movie, then go kick each other’s arse at Mario Kart. Then most importantly, go and reward yourself with a big fat chunk of the tastiest cheesecake from Urban Cheesecake (serious yum factor!).
